More COVID

This is AZ COVID deaths as of April 5. When President Trump shut the country down in mid March there were only 300 deaths.  I thought that was extreme measures for 300 deaths

The school year officially came to end, very uneventful this year since they have already been home for 8 weeks.  The most exciting thing was the teachers did a drive-by parade to say goodbye.  Trey and I did that.  I drove, he stuck his head out of the sunroof, waved at teachers and took pics. Hopefully, Trey will return to Jacobson for 6th grade.  He thought he missed Hancock, turned out he really liked the gifted program at Jacobson, he plans to go back.  I say hopefully because we don't know if schools will open in the fall or if it will be more online.

Mrs. Hull  has been the principal for 16 years since Hancock opened.  She is now retiring, no party for her 

Turns out 2020 has been pretty much awful for the entire world. It started with the news of Coronavirs breaking out late in 2019 in China then it started to spread throughout the world, then... the events just didn't stop.   I will briefly touch on a few things, leaving out many other awful events, that I really don't know the details because since 2012 I really try to avoid the news.

January

-Australian brush fires in January that were burning out of control and destroying millions of acres.
-The US killed an Iranian General with a drone strike because they were a threat.  People feared it would cause another world war.  We knew it wouldn't and it didn't. It definitely raised some fear.

- Kobe Bryant and his daughter were killed in a helicopter crash

February

-2020 is an election year-  The kick-off to the primaries was Iowa caucus, which was a complete disaster and they didn't get the results for several days later.

-First responders in Texas were attacked by a swarm of 40,000 bees
-the stock market crashes due to fears of COVID.

March
-COVID is starting to spread in the US.  NBA and MLB are canceled March 11,  March 12 the country is pretty much shut down on quarantine.

- The Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo this summer a postponed until 2021 because of Coronavirus.

- 5.7 earthquake in UTAH- that is unusual

- Schools are shut down for the rest of the school year. Everything will be done online.

April
-COVID shutdown continues in US, the US economy continues to tank with unemployment skyrocketing
- Mass shooting in Canada
- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may or may not be dead.  Rumors fly, nobody knows for sure.  Turns out he is alive.

May-
-"Murder Hornets" were spotted in the US specifically Washington State.

-5/6 Video footage of an unarmed black man, Ahmaud Arbery, was released from February showing Arbery being gunned down and killed by two white men while he was jogging in a Georgia neighborhood.

Black and white racial tensions are heating up

5/25 George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer who had his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes. Floyd’s death caused an uproar across the globe, with protests popping up worldwide. This caused Riots, burning of police stations.  Looting.  Our local malls in the Phoenix area had just barley opened up from being closed for the quarantine.  They boarded up the store fronts and closed the mall to prevent more riots and looting. 

June

-Protests continue from "Black Lives Matter"  statues are being torn down by any founding father who owned slaves.  National monuments are being vandalized.  If you say anything other than "Black Lives Matter" you are considered a racist. "Black Lives Matter" and other liberal groups are calling to defund the police.  Minneapolis, where this whole mess started, has already voted to disband their police department.  I don't see how any good can come of that.

-Another Police shooting in Atlanta, GA.  The man was approached by police because he was passed out in Wendy's drive-through.  He resisted arrest, then he fought with police and tried to take their Tazer.  The Police shot and killed him, leading to more riots in Atlanta and throughout the country.

-Arizona COVID Numbers are spiking.  We are now required to wear masks in public. We could be facing another shut down.

- School was scheduled to start July 22.  The School superintendent decided to push back the start date two weeks to August 5.  They will take a week off of Fall break and a week off Spring break. I'm still not certain school will actually resume August 5th.
