Chapter Books and Board of Review

A few weeks ago when the kids were banned from screens/electronics (we try to limit them to the weekend only)  Dax and Derek sat down with Trey and started reading him the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books.  He loved it and took off reading them on his own.  These stories are about the life of a kid in middle school.  I thought some of the content was a bit old for Trey (talk about impressing cute girls etc).  On the other hand I was glad to see Trey doing something besides video games and  he was reading at a higher level.  As soon as he buzzed through all 9 books he asked me to take him to the Library to get more.  He wanted to go immediately, so I took him Tuesday night.

His long term substitute teacher Mrs. Smool had been reading the class Junie B. Jones books and he wanted to get a new one.  A few months ago he told me about the Junie B. Jones books that he teacher was reading him but  "it had a bad word, you know the S word" so Mrs. Smool didn't say the bad "S" word.  I couldn't imagine that a kindergarten teacher was reading these books to the class.  Trey told me a little more about the book (which he was enjoying) and I had to google it to find out
what this teacher was doing.  It turned out to be this book.  I thought that was cute that "Stuipd" is a bad word, and nobody in his kindergarten class would say it.






    Anyway we went to the Library and the Librarian told me Trey was reading 3rd grade level books.  We got him his own library card, and he checked out 4 "chapter books".  He buzzed through the Junie B. Jones book because he wanted to hurry and read it so he could take it to school for Mrs. Smool to read to the class. He took it to her on Wednesday morning.   I told him he would also like Magic Treehouse books and he has already finished that one as well.  For being my kid who doesn't like school, he is excelling in every area.  I hope the good grades and good habits continue.


Eagle Board of Review.

This has been a long time coming, and there have been many frustrating moments.  On Thursday night Dax had his Eagle Board of Review.  There were so many times he didn't want to be bothered with this anymore and we kept telling him  " you will regret this if you don't finish, you are so close to the finish line, just cross it"  On Thursday he passed his board of Review, he crossed the finish line and he is now an Eagle Scout.

 He is beaming, so proud that he accomplished this, and relieved that it is over.  Curtis and I are so proud of him as well. They told us only 3% of boys earn this.   He now tells me it was worth all the nagging I gave him to get this done.

To celebrate the whole family went to Kokomo to get a cold yogurt treat.    On Thursday morning Dax also took his AP World History Exam.  He feels like he did pretty good and is expecting to pass.  We won't know until July.  This has been a great week, proud of all my kids.


Last Friday, Derek's Scout leader had some extra tickets to the Diamond Backs game so invited all the boys as a non-scouting activity, just a good time with friends.
